2011 Mini Sprint Results

Congratulations Cory!

The last race of the season finds us traveling south once again to Chowchilla Speedway about a 125 mile trek from Elk Grove.

The track was in much better condition than our last visit which was nice for the drivers.

With the temperatures cooler and the days shorter the racing was sure to be fast on this 3/8 mile track.

There were four other divisions racing with us tonight so it was going to be a long event.

Cory drew the worst pill number for the night so started last in his heat but drove great and finished in 2nd.

After all the divisions had finished the heat races the track took a break and brought all the kids from the spectator side to the pits on a trailer with hay and the kids all trick or treated from trailer to trailer in the pits. They seemed to have a great time and we enjoyed seeing all the costumes and little kids.

After the trick or treating it was time to return to racing as the main events were getting a late start.

Cory starting on the pole got off to a great start and was racing hard, got passed on lap 4 and was running second when the car seemed to get loose and he spun in turn 4 bringing out the caution and sending him to the back. After the restart Cory was working his way back up through the field and was in 4th place. But when once again spun this time in turn 2 nearly hitting a tire but kept going as he bounced through the infield but once again finding himself a half a lap down from the field. But he quickly regained his momentum and was back up to 4th place and trying to make the pass for 3rd when he either had to spin out or hit the 3rd place car that was now driving down on him..so he spun once again on the last lap of the race. Because he had already lapped most of the field he still managed to finish in the 5th place position for the night.

But the “excitement” wasn’t quite over for the night. Cory was “pickleing” the motor after the race. A term used when the drivers who run alcohol in their engines run regular gasoline back through the engine to flush the alcohol from the lines and the injectors as the alcohol is very corrosive. Well Cory had just hooked the gas tank up and started the car when KABOOM the fuel tank exploded spaying the car, surroundings and Cory with gasoline. Cory started hollering don’t let anyone smoke and grab the water jugs. As we hurried to douse the fuel before we had a bigger problem. After wetting the car, Cory had fuel in his eyes, his hair, and his clothes. He changed his shirt and cleaned up as best as he could before the long ride home.

The racing didn’t finish until well after midnight so by the time we arrived back in Elk Grove it was a little past 3 am. Another long night of racing for sure.

It was a great year for Cory in the mini sprint! Capturing his first win at Placerville Speedway and another win at Antioch Speedway along with 4 - 2nd place finishes, and 8 top 5 finishes. We completely missed one race this year due to Cory being in the funny car but Cory still finishes 3rd place in both the driver and owner championships for the BCRA Midget Lite Division for the 2011 season.

You did a great job this year Cory! We are very proud of you and your accomplishments!

Congratulations Cory

Last several laps of the Main Event

As the long summer is slowly winding down Green Motorsports made its way up the hill to Placerville Speedway for the final race at the track this season. Fall was in the air as we arrived in the foothills making for a great day of racing as the whole family was there.

Cory was looking for a comeback after his last visit at the track found him flipping through the corner at the start of the race over a spun out car, cutting his night short.

The hot lap sessions were good and Cory knew then the track would be good.

Cory started and finished in 3rd for the heat race and said the car wasn’t as good as he wanted. They quickly made some changes to the set up before the main event.

As the feature race got underway we could tell just by watching that the car was much better. Cory slipped a couple positions in the first couple laps as he found his grove but soon made a great pass to regain 2nd place on the track. Chasing down the leader now with just a few laps to go, he almost got him a couple of times but the laps ran out. Cory did a great job tonight and a great finish.

One of the final races we have scheduled was cancelled so there is only one more race for this season. Next stop Chowchilla Speedway for the finale on October 29th. See you there!

Petaluma Speedway

August 13, 2011

You can see from this photo by John Sneep Jr. just how rough the track was.

Green Motorsports finds itself “On the Road Again”.

This time for a non winged race in Petaluma, CA. The track is about 20 miles east of the ocean on Highway 101. About a 2 to 2 ½ hour trip from Elk Grove. As we arrived you could feel the cooler temperatures and the wind blowing in from the coast.

Cory is still has a sore knee and feet from the flip last weekend, but much better than before. The Midget Lites took to the track for hot laps and found that it was very slick and also already pretty rough. Cory was in the second heat and running in 2nd with just 2 laps to go spun in turn 4 and had to go to the back of the pack. He managed to finish in 3rd for the heat but meant he missed the inversion for the main event.

The track is a 3/8 mile track and very fast with long straight a ways and tight corners. The cars were clocked at about 85 miles per hour.

The track was already rough for the heat races so we knew it would only be worse come time for the main. Most tracks have a "hole" or a rough spot but this track was rough all the way around. Cory started and finished in the 6th place for the feature race. No much passing and way to rough to run the outside, almost all the cars finished where they started.

The cool air had now turned pretty cold as we packed up and headed back to Sacramento.

Arriving home around 2 am we are ready now for a much needed break in the racing action with our next race not scheduled now until September 24th where we will put the wing back on and head up to Placerville Speedway.

Oh to sleep in on a weekend. That will be nice!

 A Rough Night of Racing

A special thanks to John Sneep Jr. for capturing this video.

We were excited to return to Placerville Speedway as this is one of our favorite tracks.
Our friend Scotty is here from Australia visiting so we took him with us to race and help out.

The day was going to be a long one as it was also when the BCRA holds a picnic where they induct the folks onto the Hall of Fame. This started at 10 am in Placerville and a good friend of ours was one of the inductees so we didn’t want to miss it.

After attending the picnic we returned to the track with hopes of a great night of racing. This would be our first non-winged race in a while.

Hot laps showed that the cars were going to be fast on this well prepared track.

Cory ran a good heat race and finished in 2nd place.

As the main event time rolled around Cory was to start in the 4th place position.

As is often the case all the action happened on the first turn of the first lap after taking the green flag.

Cory following the car on the outside pole into turn one as Cory decided to go high as the outside car dove to the bottom. It would have been awesome except…..the car on the pole spun out and sliding from the bottom of the track to the top of the track leaving Cory no where to go but up and over him, flipping end to end about 3 times before coming to a rest on top of a pile of tires.

Watching someone flip when they are running without the wings is always scary because they don’t have the wing to cushion the crash. We waited with much anticipation for Cory to climb out of the car and as he emerged relief set in. They loaded the car on the hook of the tow truck and brought Cory back to the pits in the truck.

My first question was are you okay? To which he responded, “I hit my head in the back and my ears are ringing.” Cory wears a Hans device and has a full containment seat but in a head to toe flip he still had enough momentum to have his head go back against the seat hard.

With Cory’s adrenalin still in high gear, his first concern was the car. As the guys all started working on the car to assess the damages, bent radius rods and drive link, heim joints and a broken shock. When Cory tried to start the motor it wouldn’t start but after working on it for a while found that the ignition box had just got jarred hard and after taking it out and reinstalling it, the car fired. No major damage after a big flip, the racing Gods were watching out for us.

But as the night wore on Cory started to feel the effects of the accident. As the adrenalin wore off he realized that he had hit his knee pretty hard and it was now swollen and sore and overall stiffness was setting in but no major injuries so we feel very lucky. W were also happy that the other driver was okay also. I am sure after a few days Cory will be ready to return to racing. After all we have our next race this upcoming weekend in Petaluma, another non-winged race…so wish us luck.

 CONGRATULATIONS CORY!

Main Event Winner

Well this weekend was going to be a busy one in the Green Motorsports camp.
A double header race at 2 different tracks. Saturday at Antioch Speedway and Sunday at a new track for all of BCRA Midget Lites with our first trip to Merced Speedway.

For those of you, who haven’t followed the mini sprint for the last few years at Antioch, let me fill you in on our archrival. This track has been Cory’s adversary since he started in the mini sprint. At our very first race there Cory flipped, and at each subsequent  race at this track.  Cory flipped for a total of 3 times in 2008 all at Antioch Speedway. We returned in 2009 to once again flip this time flipping so hard that the brake rotor come up through the seat causing not only damage to the car but to Cory also.

Cory refused to run this track in 2010 so we stayed home that weekend. But 2011 finds Green Motorsports 3rd in the points for the owner championship closing in on the leader and missing this race would hurt our chances of claiming victory so we loaded up the trailer and headed to Antioch. You could see the anticipation in Cory’s eyes as he waited to take the track but the 1st heat race found him leading the field only to bobble just a bit on the last corner allowing fellow points leader to take the win from him just as they crossed the flag stand with Cory finishing second.

On returning to the trailer Cory was obviously upset at the lost opportunity. I think this is what set him up for the main event that surprised us all.

Cory started on the pole but lost the jump to the #2 car and followed him around for two laps before reclaiming the first place position on the track where he distanced himself from the rest of the field. We held our breath as we counted down the laps remaining and with only 3 laps left Cory went to the outside to pass a lapped car and the car drove into Cory pushing him up and he brushed the wall....we came to our feet as we thought for sure this track would get him again but he recovered and the 20 lap main event finally ended as Cory took the checkered flag and WON!
Finally…no longer would Antioch Speedway have power over Cory! He beat the beast and claimed victory lane as his own!

We sat in amazement as we watched our son drive his heart out and jumped for joy when he won. Congratulations Cory…you were great!

As Cory stopped on the front stretch to give his interview to the fans and claim his prize he told the crowd, "This means alot to me..I have been here 6 times and flipped 8!" as the crowd roared.
The rest of our teams met Cory back in the pits to congratulate him as he climbed out of the car because they all knew how important this win was.

Unfortunately the celebration didn’t get to last long enough as we still had a long drive home and another race the next day.

Cory Tearing it up at Merced

Sunday brought another race day as we headed to Merced, CA for our maiden race there.

It was a pretty small ¼ mile track but fast. The temperatures were reaching 100 as Cory climbed into the car for the heat race where he raced like he had been there before and  finished in 2nd.  Cory now preparing for the main event went out and had a good race car for the first few laps but soon found he was loose coming out of the corners. For a little while it looked like Baja racing instead of sprints but he did a great job of hanging on to it and finish in 2nd place. With another 2 hour drive to reach home we headed north back to Sacramento but as we drove we were all thinking the same thing, "Wow, what a weekend. " 1st and 2nd place! Not bad, not bad at all and moved us much closer to that championship total.

HEAT RACE

Well this will be our last trip to Marysville Speedway for this season. We were hoping for a much better night since our last trip here we blew up a motor.

Another hot day was in store for the races as we unloaded the car from the trailer. Hot laps proved to be good as Cory was 2nd quick. Cory ran a great  heat race as he started in the 4th place position but by lap 2 had moved into the 2nd place spot where he finished the heat.
The main event found Cory starting 3rd as they took the green flag. The track was extremely bumping in turn 1 and 2 as usual for Marysville. Cory racing hard to make the pass into 2nd on lap 16 spun the car and brought out the 1st caution of the night. Now racing from behind with only 4 laps left, Cory noticed the car was getting very hot but continued and finished in the 4th place. Another good Top 5 finish for the season keeping us in 3rd place in the points standings for the championship.

Upon returning to the trailer found that on the rough track the car had bounced so hard it broke the Zeus tabs off the radiator and it was laying on the header. Well that explained the overheating.

What would it be to not have to fix something before the next race? With a week off for vacation to the lake and then we return with back to back races at Antioch Speedway on Saturday, July 23 and Merced Speedway on July 24. It should be a busy weekend of racing.

July 1, 2011

This would be the first time the Green Motorsports has raced at the famed Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, CA.
Cory has attended many races there as a spectator and crew but never driven the track himself.

In typical fashion for Chico in July it was extremely hot pushing the 100 degree mark and no shade to be found. All the crews were soaking wet with perspiration by the time they had their cars unloaded and ready for race time.

Cory had worked hard to change the motor that had blown up in Marysville and get the back up motor installed and running. Of course there were the gremlins that always show up at the last minute like a leaking fuel line and a non-working o2 sensor made it a little stressful at the last minute but as Cory took the car out for hot laps we knew it would be good.

After hot laps Cory immediately made some changes to the car to match the track conditions. All of our races are pill draw races this season and Cory drew the highest pill putting him in last place to start the heat. We knew that Cory had to finish 4th in the heat to make the inversion for the main as we watched with anticipation. On the white flag lap Cory made the pass into 4th which would give him the pole for the main event.

The sun was beginning to set as they took the track for the feature but it was still very hot. Cory jumped into a quick lead but went low on the back stretch and hit a slick greasy spot on the track and bobbled just enough to allow 2 cars to pass him. Now racing to play catch up he was able to regain 2nd place by lap 5. Cory was chasing the leader but with no cautions from green to checkered for the 20 lap event Cory finished in 2nd for the evening.

It was a great race and Cory did a great job and we all decided that we liked that track a lot and I am sure we will return again for another night of racing.

Some pictures tell the entire story and this one conveys it without many words.

Cory sitting on top of his car watching the race go by from the infield with the fire truck crew beside him. Kinda tells you that it was a rough night of racing for Green Motorsports.

                                                                                                HEAT RACE

With almost a month off in the schedule Cory had been working hard to lighten the car up including himself. He bought a bicycle and has been riding it to work and working out to take some pounds off. He has done awesome and lost about 25 pounds. He also bought a light weight battery for the car and built a light weight muffler. Also put a new more efficient radiator in the car and we were having some over heating problems at the race in Chowchilla.
After arriving at Marysville Raceway we put the car on the scales and with the new lighter car and the new lighter Cory we were now 24 pounds under weight! Oh well it is easier to add than take away for sure.

Cory took the car onto the track for hot laps and it ran really great for about 5 laps and then began bogging down. He pulled it back to the trailer as they began searching for why the loss in power. Checking the injectors to make sure they were clean and looking for loose wiring, they discovered that the new muffler had blown all of the padding out blocking the exhaust. Well they found the loss in power and quickly changed to the back up muffler. The heat races the car ran well and Cory finished in 3rd place for his heat but driving the car back to the pits after the race the car just shut off! Randy got the quad and pushed him back to the trailer once again looking for the problem. They searched all of the wiring and couldn’t find anything but wondered if the new battery had gotten to hot so they reinstalled the old battery and after a push was able to restart the 53c. Now that the car was running Cory noticed it was making a pretty loud rattle in the engine but decided to take the green flag for the main event to get the points for the championship.

As they took to the track for the main event the 53c seemed to be running great, closing in on the leaders but just as she rounded turn 3 …she blew up! It blew up in a huge ball of white smoke as Cory pulled it quickly into the infield. The fire crew quickly converged on the car and began trying to tear the hood off as Cory hustled out of the car to stop them. Wait! It’s not on fire he is shouting to them…its steam! Finally convincing the fire crew not to dismantle his car they realized the huge billowing cloud of white was steam coming from the radiator not smoke. The car had thrown a rod so hard not only knocking a huge hole in the motor but sending the metal through the brand new radiator too.

Well that pretty much ended the night as Cory was forced to watch the rest of the race from the infield with the fire crew looking over his shoulder.
I am not sure if Cory was more upset that his motor blew up or that it had taken out his brand new radiator but needless to say not happy.

But he did manage to still move up in the points to 3rd place.

First thing this morning he began pulling the destroyed motor from the car, finding pieces of metal in some pretty strange places. He’s putting in the back up motor because after all we have a race in 2 weeks! Now we just need to fix the radiator.

Lets hope we have a better weekend in Chico coming up.

CONGRATULATIONS CORY!

May 14, 2011

This would be the first trip for Cory and Green Motorsports to Chowchilla Speedway.
The BCRA Midget Lites had all raced there last year but our schedule did not allow us to attend. At 140 miles and a 2 ½ hour drive away we found a 1/3 mile track that was nestled in a small town in central California.

We arrived and began unloading the car and Cory took off to get a look at the track. Well we were in for a wild night of racing as the track was more of a mud pit than a dirt track.

After the first round of mud packing the cars were so loaded down that we hadn’t finished scraping the mud when they called us up to hot lap. Hot laps in the mud? You couldn’t hot lap a swamp buggy on that track. So Cory in the lead with all racers following went to complain to officials about the condition of the track.

Officials agreed and we then had 2 more sessions of mud packing just to try to get it the track raceable. As the heat races began the track was a little better but still pretty slick as they lined up. Cory started in 3rd for the heat and finished 2nd.

As the main event arrived we were supposed to run 3rd in the events line up but with rain pending track officials once again moved our race back in the program to insure their local cars ran first. Most drivers had already got the set up on their cars ready but found that with last minute change of 25 laps of Modified’s running before us had changed the track conditons considerably but no time to change our cars we had to run them as they were.

Cory had a front row start as they took the green flag and took off with a good lead for the first 4 laps of the 25 lap main event. But soon a yellow flag restarted the field and the extended lead was now gone. They were running side by side but Cory went a little high on turn 2 to give Jason Sneep a fellow racer the lead and Jason never let go of it.

Cory running second spun in turn 2 and had to restart from the back of the pack but over the 25 laps was able to regain the number 2 position to finish the race.

It was a good finish to a bad track.

We loaded the very dirty car and the very dirty crew into the trailer for the ride home just as the rain started to fall. It rained all the way to Sacramento and arriving home at 2:30 am we all fell into bed with the mud still in our hair.

Congratulation to Jason on the win and to Cory for a great second place finish.

Sorry no video of the race as it was way too dark on a way to big of a race track for my camera to pick it up.

CONGRATULATIONS CORY!

Placerville Speedway - May 7, 2011

Main Event

As Green Motorsports returns to mini-sprint racing this will be our first winged race of the season. With the win in the funny car fresh on our minds and a successful weekend in the lil’ dragster we are ready for a return to Placerville, Cory’s favorite track.

Team Green was short one member this weekend as Tammy took a trip to San Diego to celebrate Mother’s Day with her grandsons and daughter and to visit Lego Land and Sea World. But this would be  the first time Tammy would miss watching her son race. Cory promised he wouldn’t win without her there and said if he was leading he would lift!

Turns out Cory lied!

With a freshly rebuilt motor and new throttle cable in the 53c they were ready for a return to the dirt track. Hot laps proved the car was ready as she ran second quickest time. As they ran the heat race they knew that the set up was good and Cory finished in 2nd place in his heat which put him on the outside pole position for the main event.

Keeping mom informed via text as each event unfolded.

As they lined up for the main event there was a sense that something special was going to happen. As the green flag dropped and all racers were off to a great start, Cory took the lead by turn 2 and never looked back. Running all out it didn’t take long before he was catching the tail end of the pack and got into traffic working his way through the lapped cars. With no cautions Cory didn’t know how close his competitors were to him and drove it hard every lap of the race. Relieved to see the white flag fly as he knew then he only had to hold on for one more lap. As he crossed the finish and the checkered flag flew, he realized he had just one his first main event in the mini sprint!

Cory dominated the race with 12.2 second lap times and was 2 miles per hour faster than any competitor for the night and crossed the finish line with a commanding 4.56 second win over the second place car! What a great finish!

There is a tradition in the dirt car world that you can’t buy a new wheel cover for your car until you win a race. Needless to say the wheel cover on the 53c was pretty bent and worn and Randy would fight it every time he had to put it back on during the races. As he met his son at the tech area to have the car inspected after the race, his first words to his son were, “Hey kid, I finally get a new wheel cover!” as he slapped him on the back with excitement.

Cory called his mom to tell her he had won the race…and said, “Sorry Mom, I know I said I would lift…but I couldn’t!” Naturally Tammy was ecstatic to hear the news and as her eyes filled with tears of joy for her son’s accomplishment she said to herself, “What a wonderful Mother’s Day this has been.”

   Placerville Speedway - April 9, 2011

Leading the main...

A gutsy pass..last lap..last corner..right at the flag

Green Motorsports loaded the mini sprint and headed for the opening race of the season in Placerville, CA.

As we arrived early afternoon we immediately put on our sweatshirts as we began to unload the car and get ready for hot laps. Well there wasn’t anything “hot” about it as temperatures dipped to near freezing. But cold air brings fast racing so we were excited for the night to begin.

Cory took the car to the track for the heat race and found that it was already pretty dry and slick. He finished in third for the heat and returned to the pits to change the set up for the main event.

It continued to get colder and soon everyone was adding coats and gloves and hats to their team apparel to try and keep the bite of the cold out. Cory said it was miserable driving 60 mph on the track with the wind blowing through the car.

We were the last event of the night and it was shortened to only 12 laps due to curfew.

Cory started on the outside of the front row and before they could complete the first lap a spin brought out the yellow flag. They lined the cars up for a complete restart and once again went back to racing. Cory closing on the leader quickly passed him by lap 2 and was leading the field. The glory was short lived though as lap 5 found him being caught up by the slick area between turns one and two and spun the 53c surrendering the lead. Now starting from the back and with few laps to recover Cory struggled to find away around his fellow racers. On the final lap he made an awesome pass just at the flag stand to finish in 6th place for the night.  It was a fun night of racing and we enjoyed our inaugural race of the season…albeit way to cold to enjoy the beer afterwards.

Cory will be back in the funny car next weekend but the mini sprint will be at Marysville Raceway Park with our good buddy Rick Holbrook as the pilot for this event. We wish you both tons of luck!
